Solar Fences: Power and Privacy from the Same Vertical Metre
A fence is the rare structure that owners buy for one job and never expect more from. Bifacial solar fencing gives the humble boundary a second career — generating from both faces while it keeps doing the first job free.

Solar found roofs, then fields, then façades. Its newest habitat is the boundary line: vertical, bifacial panels standing as the fence itself — around homes, along farm edges, beside warehouses and highways.
Why vertical works better than intuition says
A vertical bifacial panel faces two directions at once. Oriented east–west, it produces two strong peaks — morning and late afternoon — precisely the hours when rooftop arrays are weakest and household demand is strongest. Across a day, a well-sited bifacial fence delivers a surprising share of a tilted array's yield, and in snow, dust or high-latitude winters it often wins outright: vertical glass sheds snow, collects little soiling, and catches low winter sun square-on.
The double-duty economics
Fencing is a real budget line — materials, posts, installation, maintenance. A solar fence absorbs that entire line and adds generation on top, which flips the comparison: instead of "solar plus mounting structure," you are buying "fence that pays for itself." For agrivoltaics the case compounds — Fence2Sun-style installations across Europe have shown crops and grazing continue right up to the fence line, with land loss near zero.
Where it fits
Homes and villas: privacy screening plus a meaningful share of household consumption. Farms: paddock boundaries that pay rent, no land taken out of production. Industry and logistics: kilometres of perimeter around depots and plants — security fencing that feeds the site. Infrastructure: highway and rail corridors already lined with barriers.
Built like a fence, wired like a plant
Good systems use double-glass bifacial modules rated for structural wind loads, on galvanized posts at fence-standard depths. Cabling runs the post line to a standard inverter. Modules carry 25–30-year performance warranties — several fences longer than ordinary fencing lives.
