Hotel App Development: Booking, Check-in and the Stay Itself

Published February 28, 2024 · 6 min read

A hotel app has to earn its place three times: when the guest books, when the guest arrives, and every evening of the stay. Most hotel apps manage only the first.

Hotel App Development: Booking, Check-in and the Stay Itself

Hotel app development produces an app in which a guest books direct, checks in from the phone, makes requests during the stay, orders dining, earns loyalty and books again. GBCORP’s white-label booking and hotel app carries all of it in production, so a hotel or a small group launches a branded app on iOS, Android and the web within days at a flat monthly plan, with bookings settling to its own payment gateway and no commission on any of them.

Three moments, one app

MomentWhat the guest doesWhat the hotel gains
BookingRooms, rates, dates, packages, offers for members, card payment, confirmationDirect, no commission
ArrivalMobile check-in, ID upload, arrival time, room preferences, digital key where the lock system allowsFront desk relieved

Direct booking that competes with the portals

The app shows the same rooms and rates as the hotel’s site, with member rates and packages the portals do not carry. Payment runs through the hotel’s own gateway. A guest who booked through a portal once and installs the app books direct the second time, which is the arithmetic that pays for the app in a season.

In-stay requests that reach the right person

A request from the app lands in the console with the room number, goes to housekeeping, maintenance or the desk by rule, and shows the guest a status. Dining orders reach the kitchen with the room and the time. Every request has a response time, and the report shows them by department, which is where reviews are won.

The front-desk console

Arrivals and departures for the day, check-ins started in the app, requests by department and status, orders, messages, loyalty balances and the guest’s history. Where the hotel runs a property-management system with an API, availability, rates and folios sync as an extension; where it does not, the console is the operating screen.

Checklist before launch

  • Room types, rates, packages and cancellation rules.
  • Whether the lock system supports digital keys.
  • Departments and who answers which request.
  • Dining menus with prices and hours.
  • Payment-gateway account in the hotel’s name.
  • The three numbers to watch: direct bookings, requests answered on time, repeat stays.

The numbers to expect

Live within one to five working days on the web, store listings after review, a flat monthly plan. Property-system and lock integrations, and groups with many properties and central loyalty, are custom work on the same engine, scoped in a week and quoted per release. Customised or more complex functionality is quoted separately before any work starts.

A worked example

A ninety-room city hotel pays a portal commission on most bookings and answers requests by telephone at a desk that is busiest at check-in. On the white-label hotel app, rooms and rates are configured with a member rate the portals do not carry, mobile check-in opens the day before arrival, requests route to housekeeping and maintenance with a status, and dining orders reach the kitchen with the room number. Loyalty is switched on. In a season, repeat guests book direct in the app, the desk queue shortens at four in the afternoon, and the report shows requests answered inside the target time by department.

Integrations with what the hotel runs

Where the property-management system has an API, availability, rates, reservations and folio charges sync as an extension, so a booking in the app appears at the desk and a dinner order posts to the room. Where the lock system supports mobile keys, the key is issued at check-in and revoked at checkout. Where neither exists, the console is the operating screen and the hotel loses nothing at launch. Each integration is scoped in a week and priced as a release.

Groups and multi-property loyalty

A group runs its properties in one app with per-property content, one loyalty programme, and a console that reports per property and combined. A guest who stays in two cities earns and spends the same points. Brand can be shared or per property. Languages, currency and payment provider are per market, so a group across borders runs one platform.

Loyalty and the wallet card

Points per stay and per dining spend, tiers with member rates, a card in the phone’s wallet with the balance, offers by season and by guest history. Points are ledger entries that reconcile with revenue, so the finance team sees the cost of rewards beside the stays they drove.

Multilingual and multi-market

Guests see the app in their own language, with right-to-left layouts as a setting. A group across borders sets currency, tax and payment provider per property. Menus and content are per property in every language the hotel serves.

Ownership of the guest data

Bookings, profiles, requests, orders and loyalty balances live in a dedicated cloud project in the hotel’s name, exportable at any time. Store and payment accounts are the hotel’s. No commission on bookings, and no credentials retained by GBCORP after a hand-over unless a support contract requires them.

Questions we hear first

Does it replace our booking engine?

It can, or it can sit beside it; both settle to your own gateway with no commission.

Can guests use it without an account?

Booking as a guest is allowed; the account is offered after, for check-in and loyalty.

Does it work for a group of hotels?

Yes. Properties share one app, one loyalty programme and one console with per-property settings.

Who owns the guest data?

The hotel, in a dedicated cloud project in its name, exportable at any time.
