Exam Preparation App Development: Practice, Progress, Results

Published November 23, 2023 · 6 min read

An exam preparation app is judged on one day: the exam. Everything before it is practice, feedback and the discipline to keep going, and the app has to deliver all three.

Exam Preparation App Development: Practice, Progress, Results

Exam preparation app development produces an app in which a student practises questions, sits timed mock tests, sees progress by topic, attends classes and keeps going until the exam. GBCORP’s white-label education app platform already carries question banks, tests, progress, classes, subscriptions and the tutor console, so an academy or a tutor launches a branded exam prep app on iOS, Android and the web within days at a flat monthly plan, with student data in its own project and fees settling to its own payment gateway.

Practice that adapts

A student who gets a question wrong sees it again in a later set. Topics with low accuracy are served more often. A daily target and a streak keep the habit. The app does not need a model to do this; it needs the rules, and they are configured per exam in the console.

Mock tests that feel like the exam

Timed sections, the real question mix, no pausing, a score on the exam’s own scale, and a review that shows each question with the explanation. Percentile against other students on the platform where the academy allows it. The readiness estimate on the home screen comes from mock scores, and students watch it move.

The tutor console

Tutors upload questions with explanations, build tests, see each student’s weak topics and message them. The academy sees enrolments, active students, mock scores over time and renewals. Question quality is measured: a question most strong students get wrong is flagged for review.

Checklist before launch

  • Question bank with explanations, by topic and difficulty.
  • Exam format: sections, timing, scoring scale.
  • Plans and prices per exam.
  • Payment-gateway account in the academy’s name.
  • Tutors and their subjects.
  • The three numbers to watch: daily active students, mock scores over time, renewal rate.

The numbers to expect

Live within one to five working days on the web, store listings after review, a flat monthly plan. Adaptive engines beyond the built-in rules, proctored tests or integrations with a school system are custom work on the same engine, scoped in a week and quoted per release. Customised or more complex functionality is quoted separately before any work starts.

A worked example

An academy preparing students for a professional entrance exam runs classes in two centres and sells printed question booklets. On the education platform, its bank of four thousand questions is imported with explanations, mock tests are built to the exam’s format, classes are streamed and recorded in the app, and plans are sold per exam through the academy’s own gateway. Students outside the two cities subscribe for the first time. Tutors see weak topics per student and message them before the mock. The academy reads active students and mock scores every week, and renewal rate every month.

Live classes and doubt sessions

A timetable per batch, live classes with attendance recorded, recordings available the same day, and short doubt sessions booked by students with a tutor. Notes and slides attached to each class. Students who missed a class see it first on the home screen. The console shows attendance by class and the questions asked most, which is the list of what the next class should cover.

Multi-exam academies and franchises

An academy preparing for several exams runs each with its own bank, format, plans and progress, in one console with reports per exam. A franchise runs centres as tenants: each centre sees its own students, the head office sees all, and the question bank is shared or per centre by setting. Languages and right-to-left layouts are settings, and pricing differs per market where the academy sells in more than one.

Parents and sponsors

Where students are minors or sponsored, a parent or sponsor account sees attendance, mock scores and payments without seeing the student’s practice detail. Renewals and reminders go to the payer. It is a role in the console, switched on per academy.

Reports the academy reads

Daily active students by batch. Practice questions answered and accuracy by topic. Mock scores over time, and the readiness distribution before the exam. Class attendance and recordings watched. Trials, subscriptions and renewals by plan. Questions flagged for review. All in the console, live.

Ownership of the content and the data

Questions, explanations, recordings and student data are the academy’s, in a dedicated cloud project in its name, exportable at any time. Store and payment accounts are the academy’s. No commission on subscriptions, and no credentials retained by GBCORP after a hand-over unless a support contract requires them.

Questions we hear first

Can we import our existing questions?

Yes. Questions, explanations and tags are imported from a spreadsheet or an export before launch.

Does it support several exams?

Yes. Each exam has its own bank, format, plans and progress.

Can students work offline?

Practice sets download to the device and sync when the connection returns.

Who owns the questions and the student data?

The academy, in a dedicated cloud project in its name, exportable at any time.
